Bernard likes to sit quietly at the edge of busy rooms pretending he enjoys being alone

Bernard prefers edges.

Edges of rooms, edges of conversations, edges of days that feel slightly too loud.

He tells himself he enjoys solitude, and for the most part, that is true. But there is a softer truth underneath that he does not say out loud very often: he does enjoy company, just in very specific, carefully timed amounts.

Preferably when it arrives gently.

Preferably unannounced, but not unexpected.

Bernard spends a lot of time thinking about clouds. Not in a poetic way he would admit to - more in a practical, observational way. He has strong opinions about their behaviour and does not understand why others do not discuss them more seriously.

He often sits with a cup of something warm, looking like he is doing nothing, when in reality he is thinking very hard about everything at once.

If someone sits beside him quietly, he does not react immediately.

But eventually, he softens.

Slowly.

Like weather changing without announcement.
